Artist Statement

As a textile artist I take pleasure in the tactile and physical qualities that sewing and stitching possess and the endless possibilities they offer me in creating textural artwork. I draw my inspiration from everything around me, from daily life and from nature. I am always looking for new and unusual source material, keeping my eyes open for inspiring colours, shapes and textures. I often go to museums and exhibitions, sketching and taking photographs of anything that catches my eye. For me the inspiration and the design process are as important as the finished product.

As a textile artist I create embellished textile surfaces by combining a variety of textile techniques including hand and machine embroidery, felt making, appliqué, and the use of fabric paints and water soluble fabric. I often hand-dye or construct my own fabric which is then used as background material for my projects.

It is my ambition to combine my textile practice with my interest in the education of children in the textile sector and I enjoy sharing the skills that I have learned over the years.
